A round table on clinical legal education was held in Almaty
On April 9, 2026, a round table titled “Clinical Education in the Republic of Kazakhstan: Theory, Practice, Experience” was held in Almaty at Kунаев University.
The event was moderated by Candidate of Legal Sciences, Associate Professor of the “Law” program Leyla Abdullina. The forum was opened by the Rector of Kunaev University, Doctor of Legal Sciences Zhazira Omiralieva.
Welcome remarks were delivered by representatives of the academic and professional community, including Vice-Rector for Research Gulnapisa Begazova, Director of the Legal Clinic of KIMEP University School of Law Sergey Panasyuk, Associate Professor of the Higher School of Law “Adilet” Nurzhan Maksatov, Head of the MNU Bureau for Evaluation and Certification of Lawyers Zhanetta Kalisheva, President of the Association of Legal Clinics of Kyrgyzstan Artur Bakirov, as well as representatives of universities from Kazakhstan, Russia, and Kyrgyzstan.
During the round table, experts discussed key issues in the development of clinical legal education. Both Kazakhstani and international specialists delivered presentations. The topics covered included the development of legal clinics, international cooperation experience, the role of mentorship in training lawyers, the formation of legal awareness through practice, and the introduction of modern educational and information technologies.
Special attention was given to the transformation of legal education in Kazakhstan, improvement of teaching in specific disciplines, and the development of a practice-oriented approach in education. Participants also reviewed regional experience in providing free legal aid and the activities of legal clinics in various countries.
As part of the event, student presentations were delivered, focusing on the role of legal clinics in developing professional skills, issues of legal regulation of their activities, and the specifics of practical training for future lawyers.
Following the round table, participants emphasized the importance of clinical education for modernizing legal education and improving the quality of specialist training. Certificates were awarded to active participants.
The event confirmed a high level of youth engagement in the development of civil society, as well as their interest in promoting the principles of integrity and professional responsibility.
