History

After gaining state independence, the issues of training of highly qualified personnel in various specialties and industries became strategically important for the young Republic of Kazakhstan. It was clear that there was no need to wait for help from outside. In this regard, the leadership of the country put a special emphasis on its own reserves, development of its own potential and the Kazakhstani educational model. As a result, the private and public sectors of education in Kazakhstan received an opportunity for development on an equal legal basis. Our Academy, which at that time was a university and was named after an outstanding statesman of Kazakhstan - Dinmukhamed Akhmedovich Kunayev, was actively involved in this process as well. The University got its start in life with the personal blessing of Dinmuhamed Kunayev in 1993 and still proudly bears the name of this great man. Kunayev University was founded in 1993 as a non-state higher educational institution "College named after D.A. Kunayev". In 1994 on the basis of the College named after D.A. Kunayev "Kazakh Humanitarian Institute named after D.A. Kunayev" was formed; in 1995 it was reorganized into "Humanitarian Institute named after D.A. Kunayev"; then in 1999 it became "Humanitarian University named after D.A. Kunayev". D.A. Kunayev". Since July 11, 2000, the university became "D.A. Kunayev University". Finally, 2015 marked new perspectives in the development of the university: the goals of personnel training within the framework of the implementation of the Bologna Process principles and the development of joint educational programs with universities in Europe and the Eurasian Economic Union were set, which determined the new name, including an international component and reflecting its profile orientation - D.A. Kunayev Eurasian Law Academy. In 2023 the university was transformed into Kunayev University. Previously, the university included three regional branches in Astana, Karaganda and Taldykorgan. Currently, the university includes two colleges located in Almaty and Talgar. The University is located in the central, "student" part of Almaty, at the intersection of Kurmangazy and Baitursynov streets.

The University has its own educational and administrative complex, providing adequate conditions for students' classes and the work of administrative and teaching staff. The Academy has a unique forensic polygon, specialized laboratories, courtroom equipped with the latest classrooms with access to the world information network "Internet". At the same time, the university has deservedly acquired the status of a famous scientific center, as the university conducts training of master's and doctoral students and PhD students in legal sciences. In 2001, Professor Jalairi O.Sh. takes the initiative and together with the Institute of International Law and International Business "Daneker" opens the Joint Dissertation Council for the defense of candidate's theses at the University named after D.A. Kunayev.

Since 2008, this council has been transformed into a doctoral joint dissertation council jointly named after Y. Buketov KarGU - the only one not only in Kazakhstan, but also in the Central Asian region, which is granted the right to conduct the defense of candidate and doctoral dissertations on such new and highly demanded scientific specialties as international law and judicial power.

The Dissertation Council of the Academy, by right, was "international", as it was composed of well-known foreign legal scholars: D.J.S. from Russia, professors A.S. Avtonomov, Y.B. Mizulina, G.M. Velyaminov, D.J.S. from Uzbekistan, professors K.Z. Alimov, T.R. Mirzayev, G. Matkarimova, A.R. Rakhmanov.

More than 200 people defended candidate dissertations in the Dissertation Council, and 15 people defended doctoral dissertations, including young scientists from the PRC and Vietnam.

During its existence, the Academy, thanks to the staff made a serious application, taking its rightful place in the educational market of the Republic and continues to make a significant contribution to the preparation of specialists for the common good of progressive development of Kazakhstan in the third millennium.

On October 1, 2002, in the building of the University the Museum of History of the University named after D.A. Kunayev was solemnly opened. The ceremony was attended by relatives and friends of Dinmuhammed Kunayev. In the exposition hall personal belongings presented by relatives, as well as photo materials about the life of the University were presented.

On January 12, 2012, within the framework of the Republican action to the 100th anniversary of D.A. Kunayev "100 great deeds", the solemn opening of a new 12-storey educational complex of the Academy took place. The building, with a total area of 14,600 square meters and a teaching area of more than 8,000 m2, included more than 130 classrooms and was equipped with 6 computer labs with free internet, 12 interactive classrooms, 11 specialized classrooms and much more.

Today graduates of the Academy named after D.A. Kunayev are rightfully proud of their "Alma Mater", which gave them the most important wealth - knowledge, and opened new horizons for them in terms of professional and career growth. Today, almost all graduates of the Academy successfully work in various spheres of public administration, in law enforcement and judicial bodies, in banking and finance, and in the field of private business.

Thus, the Academy, for 30 years of its existence, has made a significant contribution to the training of specialists with higher education and to the development of legal science of Kazakhstan as a whole.

"Not to be proud only of past merits, but to continue the work on further improvement of scientific and educational activities" - this is, perhaps, the main postulate and motto of the Academy.

Kunayev University, a university with rich traditions, many years of experience in educational and scientific work, has been training highly qualified legal personnel since 1993. For 30 years of successful activity the University has trained more than 40 thousand specialists of higher qualification.

The University occupies a worthy place in the educational market of the country and continues to make its significant contribution to the process of training competitive and highly qualified specialists in various spheres of the national economy.

Kunayev University is the only private specialized educational institution in the Republic of Kazakhstan with a legal profile.

Our university is a continuous system of education, including college, bachelor's, master's, PhD. More than 60% of the teaching staff of the Academy are famous in Kazakhstan scientists, doctors, and candidates of sciences. This allows to realize the special mission of the Academy in the integration of science and education, which serves as a basis for the dynamic development of Kazakhstani society.

The university has received the right to train all categories of specialists in the third group of "Law" majors. Bachelor's degree: 5ВО30100 - Legal studies; 5ВО30200 - International law; 5ВО30300 - Law enforcement; 5ВО30400 - Customs. Master's degree: 6МО30100 - Legal studies; 6МО30200 - International law. Doctoral program: 6ДО30100 – Legal studies.

Currently, Kunayev University in order to strengthen the practical orientation in the training of legal personnel, has concluded a memorandum of cooperation in the training of specialists with the Ministry of Internal Affairs of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Republican Bar Association of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the State Revenue Committee of the Ministry of Finance of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Prosecutor's Office of Almaty, Almaty City Court.

According to the agreement reached with the first heads of law enforcement services of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the university will train legal personnel for law enforcement agencies as well.

Memorandums on cooperation in the field of training specialists are being signed with the Supreme Court of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the General Prosecutor's Office of the Republic of Kazakhstan, the Ministry of Justice of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

The university maintains educational and scientific ties with the Kyrgyz State University (Kyrgyz Republic); the federal state budgetary educational institution "Moscow State Law University named after O.Y. Kutafin (MGJA)" (Russian Federation, Moscow); the institution of higher professional education "Moscow Academy of Economics and Law" (Russian Federation, Moscow) (an agreement on the creation of a consortium of universities has been signed) and other universities and scientific institutions.

The university has its own educational and administrative buildings. In 2012, a 12-storey new unique building was put into operation, providing an opportunity for students to receive modern knowledge in various areas of higher and postgraduate education.

The university has modern, meeting all qualification requirements, educational and material base with equipped lecture halls, classrooms, specialized training rooms, polygons, excellent scientific library. There is a modern gymnasium, canteen, cafeteria, buffet and 2 dormitories.
