The Military Department of the Kunaev University was established in accordance with Order No. 433 of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan dated April 26, 2024.

By order of the Minister of Defense of the Republic of Kazakhstan No. 730 dated July 12, 2024, Kairat Boranbaevich Smagulov, a Candidate of Pedagogical Sciences and a reserve colonel, was appointed the first head of the military department. He is a recipient of the Order of Aibyn, 2nd Class.

Military training of citizens under the programs of reserve officers and reserve sergeants is carried out in military specialties based on the received higher professional education, in order to form the military-trained reserve of the Republic of Kazakhstan, as well as to supplement the primary officer and sergeant positions of the Armed Forces of the Republic of Kazakhstan.

Military training is conducted in the following military specialties:

Reserve Officer Programs (2-year training period)

• Combat use of combined arms units, formations, and formations.
• Organization of educational and ideological work in the Ground Forces.
• Legal work.
• Financial support.

Reserve Sergeant Programs (1-year training period)

• Riflemen (Section Commander).
• Combined types of material support.
• Automobiles (Operation of Automotive Equipment).

Educational and military-patriotic work is carried out in order to form a system of values in students that is aimed at respecting the Constitution and Laws of the Republic of Kazakhstan, fostering loyalty to the people of Kazakhstan and the President, and unconditionally complying with the requirements of the Military Regulations and orders of commanders.

Military training is organized and carried out using the "military day" method.

The military department's educational material base ensures the high-quality conduct of all types of classes stipulated by the curricula and programs, the complete assimilation of the studied material by students, and the acquisition of command, methodological, and practical skills in accordance with the level of development of military affairs, science, technology, and modern teaching methods.
